When I was little, my family never celebrated Halloween. We still don’t. I’m glad I was never allowed to participate in “trick-or-treating” or other Halloween activities because, as harmless as it sounds, I do not think the holiday is worthy of celebrating. It gets confusing for me though when everyone, including my Christian friends, gets really excited for it. Often churches will even host parties as an alternative. I don’t think all fall/Halloween church parties and get-togethers with friends are bad, but I think, as Christians, we should be careful.
I recently read a blog post talking about how Christians should approach the holiday and it included this verse: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8) I think this verse should be applied to all aspects of our lives and especially for events like Halloween. I encourage you to remember this verse as you decide how/if to celebrate Halloween tomorrow and remember that you are representing Christ.
