Every time Ana looks in the bathroom mirror, she examines her face and is either satisfied or dissatisfied with the way she looks. If she doesn’t like the way she looks, she’ll attempt to fix her imperfections. Wouldn’t it be strange if Ana looked at herself and saw a huge mess but instead of trying to fix it, she just walked away?
The same applies to our spiritual condition. As we listen to God’s words in the Bible and sins that have left imperfections in our lives are exposed, we have a responsibility to confess them and repent of our wrongdoing. If we choose to walk away from the mirror of God’s perfect law, we’ll fall into greater sin and get farther and farther away from Christ. No one wants that if they really understand what it means to know Christ and have a personal relationship with him. Let’s focus on God’s truth and adjust our lives so that we can be set free to live for him and receive the blessing that He’s promised us.
But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says.
Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the
word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You
see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look
carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it
says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing
it. -James 1:22-25 (New Living Translation)
